  • Sverre Fehn. Desde el dibujo came after noting the absence of a specific study about freehand drawings made by the Norwegian architect Sverre Fehn (1924-2009), whose huge graphic production ranged from conception sketches to travel drawings or illustrations of the ideas that form his theoretical thinking. The analysis of his sketches offered an insight in the raison d'être of sketching in the work of nowadays architects, after the recent emergence of new graphic tools. In order to provide a broader view of the possibilities of sketching, the thesis acquired a comparative analysis structure, so the study was extended to four architects linked -from a personal and intellectual point of view- to Sverre Fehn: Le Corbusier Louis I. Kahn, Reima Pietilä and Jørn Utzon.

In terms of methodology, the present research required, as a starting point, a thorough analysis of the existing bibliography about Sverre Fehn, and the study of numerous texts dealing with sketches made by those other selected architects. After this first step, a visit to the Sverre Fehn Archive in the Oslo Nasjonalmuseet (where Fehn’s notebooks are guarded) took place, in order to photograph, date and classify the architect’s graphic legacy. This material remains mainly unpublished, and constitutes the backbone of the thesis. The stay in Oslo also allowed to visit some of Fehn’s works and to have an interview with Eva Madshus, author of one of the most detailed studies on the work and thought of Sverre Fehn.

The results of the study revealed a constellation of influences in which Sverre Fehn’s architecture and thinking germinated. Thus, the first part of the thesis shows the influence of Le Corbusier in the general characteristics of Sverre Fehn drawings (line preeminence and free use of color); at the same time, the investigation goes in depth with Fehn’s interest in primitive art forms (specially in ancient petroglyphs preserved in Scandinavia) and in certain masters of the twentieth century avant-garde, such as Paul Klee or COBRA group members. The second part of the thesis offers a taxonomic classification of Fehn drawings attending to the purpose they were drawn for: travel drawings, conception drawings and illustrations of theoretical ideas. The first group of sketches were compared with those traced by the American architect Louis I. Kahn during his two travels throughout Europe, revealing two different ways of looking around: Kahn traveled sometimes with the eyes of a painter, Fehn, however, always looked with an architect’s eyes. The analysis of the second group, the so called conception drawings (those that can be found in the genesis of an architectural form), showed the work process of Sverre Fehn; a process in which sketches appeared again and again, like a map of the itinerary roamed by an idea from its very beginning till its final realization. Comparison with Jørn Utzon’s sketches revealed similarities and differences in the working methods of both architects. Finally, the analysis of illustrations that supported the cryptic aphorisms that make up the thought of Fehn, allowed discovering a hierarchy in his theories. Two main ideas, the horizon and death, (both related to observations written by the German philosopher Martin Heidegger) lead to a set of secondary concepts (boats, trees, towers, caves, skeletons and angels in transit between earth and sky) that appear less frequently in his sketches and prove his interest in the origin of human living. This theoretical approach is very close to the ideas defended by the Finnish architect Reima Pietilä.

The third and final part of the thesis undertook the analysis of the figure of Sverre Fehn as a teacher and lecturer at the Oslo School of Architecture and at the Cooper Union in New York. The architect, deprived of building for nearly two decades, found out that teaching was the most effective way to convey his thoughts and the ideal testing ground for his architectural ideas. In this task, sketching was his main (and almost unique) teaching tool.

Taken together, this study of Fehn, Le Corbusier, Kahn, Utzon and Pietilä’s sketches confirmed that freehand drawing has a number of inherent qualities that make it different from any modern graphical tool, both in its monological dimension( i.e. communication with oneself) and in its dialogical one (transmission and exchange of ideas).
