ABOUT ARQUIA/GRANTS 2019

Each year, the Arquia Foundation awards 24 grants to students and young architects from schools in Spain and Portugal, for professional internships in twenty European architecture studios, among which there are five Pritzker Prize winners. As part of the same call, 1 grant is awarded for an internship in cultural management at the Arquia Foundation, 3 grants for internships in the civil service, the Ministry of Public Works, Department of Architecture, Housing and Land in Madrid, and 2 more grants for young architects, for professional internships at the Metrópoli Foundation in Madrid. In addition, 2 other tuition grants are awarded for participation in the Campus de Ultzama organised by the Arquitectura y Sociedad Foundation. 20 grants are awarded to candidates with the best academic transcripts and 12 to the winners of the project competition offered by a single jury, which is selected by the Foundation for each edition. The duration of the internship is 6 months and those undertaken as the Ministry of Public Works or the Metrópoli Foundation can be extended by 6 months. The tuition grants last for 2 weeks.

The aim of the grant is to give candidates the opportunity to complement the knowledge acquired during their education with internships, and contribute to bringing the professional and academic fields closer by facilitating access for the grant recipients to qualified architecture studios.
The programme also promotes mobility within Europe, understood as an enriching factor of personal development. The internship is carried out at an architecture studio located in a different autonomous community to the one where the intern resides or studies.

The grant programme has been held annually since 2000 and the 20th call is currently being held. Up to now, 411 grants have been awarded to students and architects from all Spanish Schools of Architecture.

The professional studios with which the Arquia Foundation has agreed to collaborate for the internships are selected by students from Spanish Schools of Architecture as their favourite studios in which to undertake internships through online surveys conducted by the Arquia Foundation, every 3 years through an online survey.

The Arquia Foundation subsidises the intern with a grant of €7000 (national destinations) and €9000 (international destinations). It also covers travel expenses to the location of the internship, and provides the intern with insurance under the terms of the travel insurance policy and social security contributions as appropriate.

What are the participation modes?

There are 2 participation modes: TENDER and TRANSCRIPT. In the TRANSCRIPT mode, you can opt to be an intern in one of the 24 architecture studios mentioned in the requirements, in the Arquia Foundation, the civil service, the Ministry of Public Works, Department of Architecture, Housing and Land, the Metrópoli Foundation and in the Campus de Ultzama; and in the TENDER mode, you can only opt to be an intern at one of the 24 architecture studios listed in the requirements.

How I can participate?

You can take part in one or both modes simultaneously within the same call. To also opt for an internship in the Arquia Foundation, in the Department of Architecture, Housing and Land, in the Metrópoli Foundation and/or in the Campus de Ultzama, you must select them, whereby participants from Spanish schools will have 6 possible options for being awarded a grant in this edition; and participants from Portuguese schools, 5 options.

  • - In the case of participation by 'tender' mode, the participant will be registered when they tick the relevant box for that mode. The documentation stipulated in the requirements (see section 3. 2.) must be submitted from the 'private area' of each participant.
  • - In the case of participation by 'transcript' mode to opt to complete an internship at one of the 24 architecture studios, the participant will be registered once they tick the relevant box for that mode and they complete the two boxes that request their average marks in the approved subjects. As indicated in Annex 1 of the tender requirements, on the one hand, all degree subjects passed (including those of the project department) will be calculated, and on the other hand, only the subjects passed that belong to the project department.
  • - To opt for the internship at the Arquia Foundation, applicants who meet the requirements detailed in the tender should select the appropriate box.
  • - To opt for the internship in the Department of Architecture, Housing and Land, applicants who meet the requirements detailed in the tender should select the appropriate box.
  • - To opt for the internship at the Metrópoli Foundation, applicants who meet the requirements detailed in the tender should select the appropriate box.
  • - To opt to participate in the Campus de Ultzama, applicants who meet the requirements detailed in the tender should select the appropriate box.

How are the grants awarded?

Once the call is closed, the preselection process begins prior to the publication of the results.

  • - In the Academic Transcript mode, the grants are distributed in proportion to the number of entries received in this mode per institution of study. Once the number of grants per institution or group of institutions is determined, applications will be ordered according to the sum of average marks obtained in the degree subjects passed and the average marks obtained in the project subjects passed. In this way, the candidates with the best marks from each institution or group of institutions will be preselected.
  • - In the Tender mode, the ten grants will be distributed in proportion to the number of applicants presented per institution of study. Once the number of internships for each school or group of schools has been assigned, the Jury shall conduct a review of the proposals submitted and proceed to the selection of the ten finalists.
Once the 12 candidates for the tender mode have been selected, chosen by the single jury, and the 20 candidates for the transcript mode, the information sent as part of the registration will be verified. The participating students will therefore be requested to provide a copy of their academic transcript to ensure their compliance with the requirement of having achieved the approved number of credits. (In the case of participants selected for their transcript, it must be indicated which subjects come under the projects department).

What is the order of awarding grants in the academic transcript mode?

In the first instance, 12 grants for internships in European architecture studios will be awarded to architecture students and recently-graduated architects, according to the order of precedence of the average marks of their academic transcripts; subsequently, and also by order of priority, the Arquia Foundation grant is awarded to the candidates who selected in the corresponding box. Next, 3 grants for internships at the Department of Architecture, Housing and Land are awarded to those participants who applied for them. The 3 grants will be awarded to schools from different geographical areas.
Subsequently, 2 grants for internships at the Metrópoli Foundation will be awarded to recently-graduated architects interested in urban planning, innovation and city development who applied for them, and in order of precedence. In the event that the six-month period is renewed at the Metrópoli Foundation or the Department of Architecture, Housing and Land, the Arquia Foundation will subsidise the intern with a further €7,000.

Who will search for accommodation in the destination city?

What do I have to do at the end of the internship?

The intern must send a letter in accordance with the studio, civil service, Ministry of Public Works, Department of Architecture, Housing and Land or the Metrópoli Foundation, which confirms the full completion of the internship.
