Documentary DVD + book: arquia/documentary 26. MIES VAN DER ROHE

Mies van der Rohe (1886-1969) was an uncompromising architect in his pursuit of architectural perfection. He said, "I am convinced that architecture is the most significant expression of a civilization". Mies always felt he was fighting a war for the soul of the Modern Movement and he therefore reduced his buildings to the absolute platonic, to the evocation of the purest and most minimal idea: less is more.

The MIES documentary, eloquently narrated by his biographer par excellence, Franz Schulze, is part of the series of productions around the centennial celebration of the birth of Mies van der Rohe in 1986. From New York, Chicago, Berlin and Barcelona, work was done to update the perception of the architect's work. The film begins and ends with images of the construction works from the German pavilion for the International Exhibition of 1929. Throughout the filming, statements are interspersed with the chronological account of the work and declarations from Mies himself in archival footage.
