Beyond. Varanasi (India) in arquia/film archive

02 SEPTIEMBRE 2015 / FILM ARCHIVE

A unique documentary showing the photographer Joey L. working in Varanasi, India. The documentary of filmmaker Cale Glendening accompanies Joey and his assistant Ryan while they complete their photo series "Holy Men". Almost all religions beget ascetic individuals; wandering monks who have renounced all worldly possessions, dedicating their life to the spiritual quest of liberation from reality. Their reality is dictated only by the mind, not material objects. Even death is not a concept to be feared, but one more step away from the world of illusion.

The documentary captures the essence of Varanasi, described as the most spiritual city of India, one of the places in the world where color, chaos and crowds combine to form the magic heartbeat of the Hindu universe.

The city of Varanasi is located on the west bank of the Ganges and spans the river bank in a disorienting maze of narrow streets in a frantic and intense atmosphere that enraptures the visitor after overcoming the initial culture shock. The city empties into the giant steps that define the river limits, where the pilgrims come to cleanse their souls in the waters of the Ganges.
