  • THE ENCLOSURE PERMANENCE IN ARCHITECTURE.

ENCLOSURE; MONUMENT; OPEN – CLOSED LIMITS; TERRITORY

The subject of this doctoral thesis is to demonstrate the importance of uncovered space, the link of enclosed space in the shaping of architecture and the permanence of the enclosure as an abstract operator, as an essential component itself, as is the space and tectonics in the essence of architectural creation.

The enclosure has been notably absent in architectural theory, although it has remained in the archaeological heritage which adopted it.

When the architecture is capable of being subtly sensitive to the environment, with an attitude of interaction with it, architecture gradually grows from a conceptual framework conceived as an effort to understand the significance of the place, creating a dual relationship, produced by the arrangement of the boundaries between the geometric and the natural world, and the one organized by the level of relationship and overlap between the two worlds. The search for rational clarity of boundaries on the one hand, and their ambiguity, suggesting the existence of an architectural operator that synthesizes multiple relationships and arrangements into a single system. Introducing the notion of boundaries in architecture, limits that may well be dominant and predominant as well as ambiguous, fuzzy, contextual, sensitive or atmospheric. These limits can be generated and kept intact or gradually grow to change to a completely different level of relationship. Obviously this architectural operator so common in the natural world appears simultaneously in distant places and from different starting points, because their relationship with the environment can be authoritarian or subtly sensitive and therefore its attitude may range from the domination of territory to the simple differentiation.

These limits are marked by three simple elements, the levelling of earth, which generates a horizontal plane, that deliberately denies irregular topographic conditions in the environment but allows its contemplation, being the paving what further contributes to this differentiation with the natural surrounding environment since it generates horizontal lines at its edges that mark the boundaries accurately. The construction of the wall, which can be considered a screen whose vertical component is the counterpart of the horizontal plane that is generally available, has as its main characteristic the opacity of the material from which it is built, as it defines the area by the visual obstruction beyond itself, and which it protects and defines by the accuracy of the horizontal lines that are generated in its lower and upper edges. This high horizontal line generated by the wall is as defining of space as the bottom line located at ground level. The lintel, that high wall on columns thus generates a high horizontal line as important in defining space as the one generated at ground level by the edge of the paving. Due to its deliberate high location this distinctive high wall also causes a distant view that will convert it into an enclosure-monument.

As a direct result of a reflection, a condensation; we have linked the enclosure with its complementary monument, as the former becomes valuable owing to its limits, though the latter becomes a corporeal element that needs the pre-configuration of the enclosure to be convened as a reference.

The paradox that we find is that the architectural works that have exceeded their contemporary and resurfaced or remained in the memory of various civilizations are those that have been reached through a process of condensation; being currently the most innovative and radical works that delve into the reading of history.
